My backlog

Bloganuary writing prompt
What books do you want to read?

A lot of the books I’ve read for the past several years have been written by authors I follow on social media. I have purchased more books than I’ve read lately, so I’d like to get through some of them before buying new books.

I probably won’t follow this plan. However, here’s a few from my pile I’d like to read:

  • The Chasm by Jacqui Castle. It’s a dystopian novel, a genre I’ve tended toward for a while. I read Ms. Castle’s first book, The Seclusion, when it came out, I prepaid for it and got it as soon as it was published. I looked forward to the sequel, The Chasm. The pandemic delayed the release of this book, so some time had passed between reading The Seclusion and its arrival. I’ll probably reread the first book in the series before moving on to the new one.
  • I bought three books written by Richard Leyland, an author I used to be connected with on a social media platform I left. They are titled Vessel, Return, and Bringing the Doom. I’ll read one of the books this year and, if I like it, I’ll read the others.
  • The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs, a book I mentioned in an earlier post, is still collecting dust on one of my unused computer towers. Its subtitle is “How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation.” I’ve read books about MLK and Malcolm X. I’m not very familiar with James Baldwin. I heard about the book while listening to NPR on my commute and bought it when I got home.
  • The Dark Queen by Dana Gricken. I’ve got a feeling my wife will like the book more than I will but I’m going to give it a shot. I used to follow Dana on Twitter and bought the book after seeing her promote it a lot. It’s been collecting dust for a year.
  • I’m looking forward to reading more by Wayne Kent. I finished his Echo series a week ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. I follow “Wayne” on WordPress. He writes interesting “Musings” and frequent wacky book promotions. I put his name in quotation marks because he admits it’s a pseudonym. I’ve wondered if it comes from Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Clark Kent (Superman).

I follow a few other authors on WordPress now. Eventually, it’s likely I’ll purchase some of their books. I also have other unread books I’d like to finish. When I just looked in my closet, I saw it contained college textbooks I no longer need. I’ll get rid of them when I finally move to Phase II Decluttering, whenever that might be. It’ll make room for more books in my “to read” queue.

  1. I’d love to follow more authors on WordPress? I am a readaholic, if that is a word lol

    1. If readaholic isn’t a word, maybe it should be. I followed a couple of authors so far. I’m sure I’ll encounter more in the future.

  2. “I probably won’t follow this plan” made me laugh. Same. Same. Interesting list but I must not (Must. Not) add more books to my list right now. Time to savor the ones I already have!
